Red Eye Angel

Product Details

1. Water Temperature & Parameters

Red Eye Angelfish are slightly more sensitive to water fluctuations than standard varieties due to their albino genetics.

  • Ideal Temperature: 76°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C). They prefer the warmer side of the tropical range.
  • pH Level: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.5 to 7.0 is ideal).
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderate (5 to 12 dH). Clean, well-filtered water is a must.

2. Body Features

  • Red Eyes: Their most striking feature. Because they are albinos, they lack dark pigment, allowing the red blood vessels in the eyes to be visible.
  • Coloration: A solid pearly white or cream-colored body. Under certain lights, they can have a shimmering, iridescent quality.
  • Structure: They have the classic tall, compressed diamond shape with long, delicate flowing fins.
  • Size: They typically reach 6 inches in length, but can grow up to 8 inches tall from the tip of the top fin to the bottom.

3. Feeding Guide

  • How Many Times: 1 to 2 times a day for adults; juveniles need 3 to 4 small meals to grow properly.
  • How Much: Only what they can finish in 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Diet: Use high-quality cichlid flakes or pellets as a base. Since they are more delicate, supplement frequently with frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms, or mysis shrimp to boost their immune system and color.

4. Behaviours

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive. They are peaceful when young but can become very protective of their space as they get older, especially if they form a breeding pair.
  • Light Sensitivity: Their red eyes are sensitive to bright light. They are much happier in a tank with floating plants (like Amazon Frogbit) or dim lighting to provide shade.
  • Social: They are "shoaling" fish, meaning they like to be in a group of their own kind (ideally 5 or more) when young.

5. Friendly Tank Mates

Choose calm fish that won't nip at their long, white fins.

  • Bottom Dwellers: Corydoras Catfish and Kuhli Loaches are perfect neighbors.
  • Peaceful Schooling Fish: Rummynose Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, and Cardinal Tetras.
  • Avoid: Fast, nippy fish like Tiger Barbs or Serpae Tetras, and very small shrimp which will likely become a snack.
