Zebra Angel

Product Details

The Zebra Angelfish (a classic variety of Pterophyllum scalare) is named for its striking vertical stripes that mimic a zebra's pattern. They are generally considered heartier than the more specialized Albino or Red Eye varieties.

1. Water Temperature & Parameters

Zebra Angelfish are quite resilient but thrive best in standard tropical conditions.

  • Ideal Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).
  • pH Level: 6.0 to 7.5. They can adapt to a wider range of pH levels compared to more sensitive breeds.
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (5 to 13 dH).

2. Body Features

  • Pattern: Their hallmark is 4 to 5 distinct vertical black stripes running across a silver or light grey body. One stripe almost always runs directly through the eye.
  • Fins: They possess tall, upright dorsal fins and long, thin pelvic fins (the "feelers"). The stripes often extend into the fins, creating a very cohesive look.
  • Shape: The standard diamond-shaped, flat body characteristic of all Angelfish.
  • Size: They can grow to about 6 inches (15 cm) in length and reach a height of 8 inches (20 cm) or more.

3. Feeding Guide

  • How Many Times: 1 to 2 times daily for adults; 3 to 4 times for growing juveniles.
  • How Much: An amount they can fully consume in under 3 minutes.
  • Diet: As omnivores, they need a mix of plant-based and protein-heavy foods. They love flake food, cichlid pellets, and freeze-dried tubifex worms. Occasional live brine shrimp will help bring out the deep black of their stripes.

4. Behaviours

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive. They are active swimmers and tend to be slightly more "bold" than the Red Eye variety.
  • Hierarchy: They establish a clear "pecking order" within their group. If the tank is too small, the dominant fish may bully the others.
  • Observation: They are highly intelligent and will often follow your movement outside the tank, especially if they associate you with food.

5. Friendly Tank Mates

Since Zebra Angelfish have bold patterns, they look great with silver or colorful schooling fish.

  • Safe Schooling Fish: Rummynose Tetras, Lemon Tetras, and Congo Tetras (the larger size of Congos makes them very safe).
  • Bottom Dwellers: Corydoras, Bristlenose Plecos, and Yo-Yo Loaches.
  • Community Pairs: Swordtails and Platies (though they may eat any fry/babies these fish produce).
  • Avoid: Very small fish like Neon Tetras (which look like food) and aggressive fin-nippers like Bucktooth Tetras.
