Detailed Water Parameters

Temperature

Male assorted Bettas are tropical and require a stable temperature of 76°F – 81°F (24°C – 27°C).

  • The Importance of Warmth: Bettas kept in unheated bowls or cold water will have a suppressed immune system, making them easy targets for diseases like Ich or Velvet.
  • Activity Levels: Since assorted males can have any fin length, warmer water helps the long-finned varieties maintain the energy needed to carry their heavy tails.

pH Level

They thrive in a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.

  • Adaptability: These fish are generally very hardy because they come from diverse genetic backgrounds. They can tolerate a pH up to 8.0, provided it does not fluctuate rapidly.
  • Conditioning: Regardless of the pH, using a water conditioner to remove chlorine and heavy metals is mandatory for every water change.

Feeding Routine and Quantity

When to Feed

It is best to feed your male Betta once or twice a day. If feeding twice, give one small portion in the morning and another in the evening.

How Much to Feed

  • Quantity: Feed 2 to 3 high-quality pellets per meal.
  • The Eye Rule: A Betta’s stomach is roughly the size of its eye. Avoid feeding more than that amount at once to prevent bloating.
  • Variety: Because "assorted" males can have different energy needs, offering a mix of high-quality pellets and occasional treats like frozen Bloodworms keeps them in peak condition.
  • Fasting: Skip feeding for one day every week. This "rest day" helps the fish clear its digestive tract and prevents swim bladder issues.

Tank Mates and Social Compatibility

Friendly Companions

Male Bettas are famously solitary and territorial. However, in a 10-gallon tank or larger, they can live with:

  • Bottom Dwellers: Corydoras Catfish or Kuhli Loaches are excellent because they do not compete for space at the surface.
  • Snails: Nerite Snails or Mystery Snails are very safe and help control algae.
  • Small Schooling Fish: Ember Tetras or Harlequin Rasboras are usually peaceful and fast enough to avoid a moody male.

Fishes to Avoid

  • Other Male Bettas: Never put two males together; they will fight until one is severely injured or dead.
  • Fin Nippers: Avoid Tiger Barbs or Serpae Tetras. These fish will find a male’s long fins irresistible and will nip them, leading to infection.
  • Look-alikes: Avoid Fancy Guppies or Endlers. The Betta may mistake their colorful tails for another male Betta and attack them.

Physical Body Features

Since these are "Assorted," their physical traits can vary wildly, but here is what you will generally see:

  • Vibrant Colors: Assorted males can be solid red, blue, or purple, or "multi-colored" with splashes of different hues.
  • Varied Tail Types: An assorted male might be a Veiltail (long and drooping), a Deltatail (triangular), or a Combtail (spiky edges).
  • Labyrinth Organ: Like all Bettas, they can breathe air from the surface. You will see them "gulp" at the top periodically.
  • Aggression Cues: Males have a large "beard" (membrane) under their gill covers that they flare out when they feel threatened or territorial.
  • Upturned Mouth: Their mouths are designed to eat insects from the surface of the water.
