Detailed Water Parameters

Temperature

Red Calico Platies are flexible but thrive best between 70°F and 80°F (21°C – 27°C).

  • Optimal Range: A steady 75°F (24°C) is ideal for maintaining their immune system and encouraging active behavior.
  • Hardiness: While they can tolerate cooler water than Bettas, they should not be kept in unheated tanks where temperatures swing wildly.

pH Level

They prefer slightly alkaline water, with a pH range of 7.0 to 8.2.

  • Water Hardness: Platies are "hard water" fish. They need minerals like calcium and magnesium in the water to stay healthy. If your water is very soft, you may need to add crushed coral or mineral salts.
  • Cleanliness: Like all community fish, they require a cycled tank with 0 ppm Ammonia and Nitrite. Weekly 20–25% water changes are recommended.

Feeding Routine and Quantity

When to Feed

Feed your Platies once or twice a day. They are active swimmers with high metabolisms and will constantly graze on algae in between meals.

How Much to Feed

  • Quantity: Provide an amount they can finish in under 2 minutes.
  • Omnivorous Diet: They need both protein and plant matter. A high-quality tropical flake is an excellent staple.
  • Algae Lovers: They have a natural craving for greens. Supplement with spirulina flakes or blanched veggies like zucchini or peas.
  • Color Boosting: To keep the "Red" in Red Calico vibrant, offer frozen or live Brine Shrimp or Daphnia once or twice a week.

Tank Mates and Social Compatibility

Friendly Companions

Platies are incredibly peaceful and social. They should be kept in groups of at least 3 to 6.

  • Community Fish: They get along perfectly with Guppies, Mollies, Swordtails, and small Tetras.
  • Bottom Dwellers: Corydoras Catfish and Kuhli Loaches are great tank mates.
  • The Ratio Rule: If keeping males and females together, aim for 2–3 females for every 1 male. Males can be persistent "chasers," and this ratio prevents any single female from getting too stressed.

Fishes to Avoid

  • Large Predators: Avoid anything big enough to eat them, like large Cichlids or Oscars.
  • Aggressive Fin-Nippers: While Platies have short fins, aggressive nippers like Tiger Barbs might still bully them.
  • Male Bettas: While sometimes possible in large tanks, Bettas may find the bright red color of the Platy threatening.

Physical Body Features

  • Calico Pattern: The defining feature is the bright red base covered in irregular black speckles or splotches. No two fish have the exact same pattern.
  • Body Shape: They have a short, "stocky" body shape compared to the more streamlined Swordtails.
  • Livebearers: Like Guppies, they do not lay eggs. They give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry.
  • Size: They stay small, reaching an adult size of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5–6 cm).
  • Sexual Dimorphism: * Males: Have a pointed anal fin called a gonopodium.

Females: Have a fan-shaped anal fin and are generally larger and rounder.
